Description

Treasury stock is a type of security that represents the shares that a company has repurchased from its shareholders and is holding in its own treasury. Treasury stock reduces the number of shares outstanding and the shareholders’ equity on the balance sheet. Treasury stock does not have voting rights or pay dividends and is not included in the calculation of earnings per share. Treasury stock can be reissued to the public, used for employee compensation, or retired permanently. Companies may buy back their own shares to increase their earnings per share, boost their stock price, or limit outside ownership.
