The total number of shares that a company has issued and that investors own as of a certain date. This number does not include any shares that the company owns itself (treasury shares), unless the company reports them. It also does not include any shares that the company plans to issue in the future. Shares outstanding are used to calculate important measures such as market capitalization and earnings per share.
