A Robust Quarter

Best Buy reported a strong second quarter, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.47, a 15% increase from the prior year, and revenue of $9.78 billion, up 3.6% year-over-year. Comparable sales grew 4.1%, exceeding the company's expectations. The adjusted operating margin expanded to 4.3% from 3.9% a year ago, reflecting improved profitability.

"We are pleased with our performance in the second quarter, which was driven by strong customer demand for our products and services," said CEO Corie Barry in a statement.

The company's results benefited from a recovery in consumer electronics demand, as well as continued adoption of its services and marketplace initiatives.

Raised Guidance

Encouraged by the quarter's results, Best Buy raised its full-year fiscal 2027 guidance. The company now expects adjusted EPS in the range of $6.70 to $6.90, up from its previous forecast of $6.30 to $6.60. Revenue is now projected at $42.3 billion to $42.8 billion, compared to the prior range of $42.0 billion to $42.5 billion. Comparable sales are expected to grow between 1.9% and 3.0%, an upgrade from the previous outlook of 1.0% to 2.5%.

For the third quarter, Best Buy anticipates comparable sales to increase between 1% and 3%.

"We are raising our fiscal 2027 outlook based on the strength of our second-quarter results and our expectations for continued momentum," said CFO Matt Bilunas.

Capital Return and Market Context

Best Buy declared a quarterly dividend of $0.96 per share, payable to shareholders. Additionally, the company expects to repurchase approximately $300 million in shares during fiscal 2027.

The results come as the retailer navigates an increasingly competitive landscape, with rivals intensifying their advertising and marketplace efforts. Best Buy has been investing in its own marketplace and services to drive growth and margin expansion.

Analysts view the raise positively. "Best Buy's strong quarter and improved guidance reflect solid execution and a favorable demand environment," said analyst Sarah Thompson.

Investors responded favorably, with shares rising in early trading.

Outlook

The company's ability to sustain growth hinges on its mix shift toward higher-margin services and marketplace initiatives, as well as overall consumer spending trends. Best Buy remains focused on delivering value through its capital return program and operational efficiencies.

The retailer's domestic and international operations both contributed to the quarter's performance, though specific regional details were not disclosed.

As Best Buy moves forward, it faces challenges from supply-chain dynamics and changing consumer preferences, but the upgraded outlook suggests management's confidence in navigating these headwinds.
