- ChatGPT now attracts more monthly visits than Wikipedia, according to March 2025 data.
- Despite fewer unique visitors, OpenAI's platform has grown exponentially, reaching 400 million weekly users.
- Wikipedia continues to see declines in both total visits and unique users, down 18% since 2022.
A New Era in Digital Information
OpenAI's ChatGPT has officially overtaken Wikipedia in monthly website visits, marking a watershed moment for AI-driven platforms. Fresh data from March 2025 shows the chatbot attracting half a billion more visits than the venerable online encyclopedia, though Wikipedia still maintains roughly 2½ times as many unique visitors.
The milestone caps an extraordinary growth trajectory for ChatGPT since its November 2022 launch. From just 1 million weekly users in its first month, the platform now serves 400 million users weekly according to OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap. This represents a staggering 400-fold increase in just over two years.
Wikipedia's Slow Decline
Meanwhile, Wikipedia's metrics tell a different story. The platform has seen unique visitors drop by nearly 200 million (18%) since March 2022, with total daily visits falling from 263 million to 226 million over the same period. This translates to a loss of more than 1.1 billion monthly visits - a troubling trend for the nonprofit knowledge repository.
"We're seeing fundamental changes in how people seek information," said one industry analyst who asked not to be named due to client relationships. "The convenience of conversational AI appears to be drawing users away from traditional research methods."
What's Driving ChatGPT's Growth?
Several factors contribute to ChatGPT's rise:
- Referral traffic from platforms like YouTube (accounting for 62% of social media-driven visits)
- Strong adoption among lower-income users (64.03% of its user base)
- Continued refinement of its conversational capabilities
OpenAI isn't resting on its laurels - the company reportedly aims to reach 1 billion users by year's end. With Wikipedia's declines showing no signs of reversing, the gap between these two information sources may only widen in coming months.
Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the percentage decline in Wikipedia's unique visitors. The correct figure is 18%, not 20% as previously reported.
