- Sony (SONY)'s U.S. PS5 unit sales jumped 22% in September, fueled by anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, per Circana data.
- PS5 hardware revenue soared 43%, reflecting price increases and strong demand for the premium PS5 Pro, which is sold out or in limited supply at major retailers.
- Despite the sales boost, Sony's latest quarterly gaming profit surge was attributed to tariff refunds, not GTA VI, and the game's launch is still over a year away.
A Blockbuster Effect Before Launch
Sony's PlayStation 5 is experiencing a significant sales bump well ahead of the release of "Grand Theft Auto VI," the highly anticipated title from Rockstar Games (TTWO). According to data from Circana reported by Bloomberg on October 22, U.S. PS5 unit sales climbed 22% in September compared to the same period last year. Even more striking, PS5 hardware revenue surged 43%, driven by both the unit increase and a shift toward the higher-priced PS5 Pro, which retails for $900 and is currently sold out or in limited supply at several major retailers worldwide.
The key driver behind this surge is anticipation for GTA VI, which Rockstar has slated for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Although the game is still more than a year away, the October 15 release of its launch trailer and prominent marketing of PlayStation benefits on the game's official website appear to be motivating consumers to purchase hardware now. This phenomenon is not isolated to the U.S.: UK PS5 sales rose 33% during the week of an August promotional reveal, according to NielsenIQ (NIQ) data reported by VGC, indicating a broader hardware boost from the upcoming blockbuster.
Revenue Growth Outpaces Unit Growth
The disparity between the 43% revenue increase and the 22% unit increase highlights that consumers are gravitating toward the more expensive PS5 Pro model. While this bodes well for Sony's hardware margins, it also suggests that the sales boost is partially price-driven rather than purely volume-driven. "The premium console demand we're seeing is unprecedented for a mid-cycle refresh," said one analyst who requested anonymity to discuss market dynamics. "It shows that consumers are willing to pay up for the best possible experience ahead of GTA VI."
However, the sustainability of this momentum remains uncertain. Sony's latest quarterly results, covering April–June 2026, showed gaming revenue essentially flat at ¥937.1 billion, with operating income jumping 37% to ¥202.0 billion—but that profit increase was primarily due to U.S. tariff refunds and favorable currency effects, not game sales. Hardware unit sales and third-party game sales actually declined during that quarter. The September surge therefore represents a sharp reversal, but it is too early to tell whether it will translate into sustained profitability.
A Timely Boost Amidst Challenges
The sales uptick comes at a critical time for Sony's gaming division, which has been navigating a transitional period. Hiroki Totoki took over as Sony Group president and CEO in April 2025, and Hideaki Nishino became president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment on the same date. The company has also been restructuring its financial-services business, completing a partial spin-off in October 2025. Meanwhile, Sony faces headwinds from elevated memory prices and changing U.S. tariff policies, which management has identified as ongoing risks.
For now, the GTA VI halo effect is providing a welcome tailwind. "A blockbuster release can revive hardware demand even before launch," noted a source familiar with Sony's strategy. "We're seeing that play out in real time." The November 2026 launch window sets the stage for a potentially massive holiday season for both Sony and Microsoft (MSFT), as the game will be available on both platforms. Analysts polled by Bloomberg expect GTA VI to sell approximately 40 million copies across PlayStation and Xbox and generate more than $3 billion in its first four months—forecasts that, if realized, would benefit the entire console ecosystem.
Sony did not respond to a request for comment on the September sales figures. The Circana data covers U.S. sales only and does not specify the comparison period for the 22% increase; it should not be interpreted as worldwide growth or as Sony's overall revenue growth.
Clarification: An earlier version of this article misstated the timing of the GTA VI launch trailer. It was released on October 15, 2026.
