In a recent note, the bank argues that the recent climb in long-term yields is partly a reflection of the bond market pricing in a stronger future productivity cycle from AI investment, rather than solely higher inflation expectations or fears over public debt. This interpretation, if correct, suggests that equities can continue to advance even as yields rise.

The bank's latest equity strategy is constructive into year-end, but it does not expect a broad "melt-up." Instead, it anticipates a gradual advance marked by sector rotation, valuation dispersion, and wider market participation.

Earnings and Leadership in Focus

The underlying earnings backdrop is powerful but uneven. J.P. Morgan Private Bank reports S&P 500 revenue growth of 16% year over year and earnings growth approaching 52%; adjusted for major one-off investment gains, earnings growth is about 32%. It says 86% of companies beat EPS estimates, and all 11 sectors recorded positive revenue growth.

However, concentration remains a concern. Another J.P. Morgan analysis estimates second-quarter S&P 500 EPS growth at about 38% year over year, but says only 10 companies account for 77% of the expected gain—evidence that headline earnings strength remains concentrated.

This concentration is particularly pronounced in technology. Semiconductor EPS is projected to grow 134% year over year and contribute 61% of index-level earnings growth. The core caveat is funding: AI-related debt issuance has exceeded $220 billion so far this year, double the prior-year total, while U.S. corporate bond issuance has reached $1.68 trillion, nearly 27% above the comparable 2025 period. That supply can itself put upward pressure on long-dated yields.

The largest technology firms' capex is expected to surpass $1 trillion in 2027, making the question of debt capacity, data-center utilization, chip demand, power availability, and AI monetization unusually important.

JPMorgan acknowledges the uncertainty: consumer AI use is widespread, but enterprise deployment is slower because it requires data integration, security, workflow redesign, and governance—not merely access to more capable models.

Political and Global Context

Semiconductors sit at the center of U.S.–China technology competition. U.S. export restrictions on advanced AI chips and related computing equipment have been in force since 2022, with 2026 policy actions revising licensing rules and placing tariffs on a narrow category of advanced AI semiconductor imports.
