Elon Musk declared that advanced artificial intelligence and robotics will create widespread abundance and could make traditional employment optional for many people.
Speaking at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum alongside Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Musk argued that the combination of AI and advanced robotics will dramatically boost productivity and lower the cost of goods and services. "We are approaching a point where the combination of AI and advanced robotics will create such abundance that work will become optional," he said.
Musk highlighted Tesla's humanoid robot project, Optimus, as an example of transformative technology. "One day, everyone will have one of these robots," he said, suggesting such machines could perform much of the physical labor now done by humans.
His remarks came shortly after Saudi Arabia announced a $1 trillion investment commitment in the United States, with AI infrastructure identified as a key priority. The pledge underscores how AI has become central to international investment and economic strategy.
Representatives from Tesla and Nvidia did not provide extended comment beyond the public statements made at the forum. Observers noted that the Saudi investment aligns with the kingdom's Vision 2030 goals to diversify its economy and build technology capabilities.
Musk's vision prompted debate among economists and policymakers. Some say automation could generate new opportunities and higher overall living standards, while others warn of transitional disruption and emphasize the need for policies to manage wealth distribution and workforce displacement.
Industry analysts cautioned that widespread personal robot ownership and an "optional-work" economy face significant technical, regulatory, and social hurdles that were not resolved at the forum. Nonetheless, the new investment commitment could accelerate AI development and bring aspects of Musk's prediction closer to reality.
