• Shopify merchants will soon be able to sell products directly within ChatGPT through a native integration
  • The feature represents a significant shift toward conversational commerce and could challenge traditional e-commerce and advertising models
  • The rollout is happening in stages as Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke pushes an "AI-first" agenda across the company

Shopify Inc. and OpenAI are partnering to enable direct sales from Shopify merchants within ChatGPT, according to people familiar with the matter, creating what could become one of the world's most valuable digital advertising spaces.

The integration will allow users to discover and purchase products seamlessly inside the chat interface, fundamentally changing how consumers interact with merchants online. The feature is rolling out in stages, with code hints and confirmed announcements pointing toward a formal, native integration that could significantly disrupt existing e-commerce and advertising landscapes.

"This represents the next evolution in how people shop online," said one executive briefed on the partnership, who asked not to be identified discussing unreleased features. "Instead of searching through multiple websites, consumers will be able to have a conversation and complete purchases without ever leaving the ChatGPT interface."

Shopify, which supports over 1.7 million merchants globally, has been positioning itself as an AI-first company under CEO Tobi Lütke's leadership. Internal restructuring around AI-led initiatives has been underway for months, with Lütke urging employees to prioritize artificial intelligence hires and solutions across the organization.

The timing aligns with Shopify's strong financial performance in 2025, which company executives have attributed to its AI-first strategy and international expansion. The ChatGPT integration is expected to further expand sales opportunities for Shopify merchants, particularly in diverse international markets where European merchants will gain expanded access to ChatGPT's extensive user base.

This move intensifies competition in the rapidly emerging field of AI-assisted shopping. Amazon, Microsoft, and Perplexity AI have all launched similar conversational commerce tools over the past year, though the Shopify-OpenAI partnership represents one of the most comprehensive integrations to date.

Industry analysts note that the partnership could challenge incumbent search and advertising models, particularly Google's dominance in product discovery. "When AI can generate transactional intent through conversation, the entire landscape of digital advertising shifts," said a technology analyst who covers both companies. "This isn't just about making shopping easier—it's about redefining how consumers decide what to buy."

Regulatory considerations around data privacy, antitrust, and digital commerce regulations in both the EU and US are likely to attract attention as AI-driven shopping blurs traditional lines between search, advertising, and transactions. Neither company has commented publicly on how they plan to address these concerns.

Shopify merchants contacted for this story expressed cautious optimism about the new sales channel. "Any opportunity to reach customers where they're already spending time is valuable," said one merchant who operates stores in both North America and Europe. "But we'll be watching carefully to see how this affects our brand identity and customer relationships."

The integration follows Shopify's ongoing push for automation and embedded AI since at least 2023, mirroring earlier industry moves such as Amazon's "Buy for Me" feature and Microsoft's Copilot Merchant Program. What sets the current partnership apart is its native integration and the scale of Shopify's merchant network.

As the feature rolls out, merchants should prepare for increased competition within ChatGPT's product recommendations, emphasizing trusted fulfillment and post-purchase customer experience to stand out in the conversational commerce landscape.

Correction: An earlier version of this article misstated the number of merchants using Shopify. The correct figure is over 1.7 million.
