• SpaceXAI is considering a four-tier subscription model combining Grok and X, with a $100-per-month "Ultra" plan that includes access to the Grok Bot AI agent.
  • A cheaper $8 "Lite" tier would bundle Grok access, X verification, and fewer ads, as the company looks to expand recurring subscription revenue.
  • The proposal aims to convert a larger share of X and Grok users into paying subscribers while helping fund the exceptionally high cost of AI models, inference, and data-center buildout; it is not yet a confirmed product launch.

Four-Tier Structure

SpaceXAI is weighing an overhaul of subscriptions across Grok and X that would create a unified, four-tier ladder from free to a proposed $100-per-month "Ultra" plan, according to people familiar with the matter. The move, reported by Bloomberg on September 30, would mark the most ambitious attempt yet to monetize the combined user base of the social platform and its AI chatbot.

The reported outline includes a free tier with limited access, an $8-per-month "Lite" tier that bundles Grok access, X verification, and fewer advertisements, and higher paid tiers with more capacity and features that have not been fully detailed. The $100 Ultra tier would include access to Grok Bot, an AI agent intended to operate more like an always-on worker than a conventional chatbot.

The crucial commercial change is bundling: instead of treating X verification, ad reduction, chatbot access, and agent capabilities as largely separate products, the company would package them into one ladder. That creates clearer upgrade incentives but also makes X's social-media value proposition more dependent on its AI stack.

Funding the AI Buildout

The proposal comes as SpaceXAI faces mounting costs for AI models, inference, and data-center buildout. SpaceX, which acquired xAI in February 2026, generates substantial cash from its launch and Starlink operations, but the AI unit remains heavily loss-making. xAI reportedly lost $1.46 billion in the quarter ending September 2025, after a $1 billion loss in the preceding quarter, even as revenue nearly doubled sequentially to $107 million.

A $100 tier would therefore be less about ordinary chatbot monetization alone and more about finding a premium consumer and prosumer revenue stream to offset compute, energy, GPU, and model-serving costs. The company has been expanding its Colossus data-center operations in Memphis and Southaven, and has reportedly placed veteran SpaceX and Starlink personnel into leadership roles there, a sign that compute infrastructure is becoming strategically integrated with the group's launch and satellite businesses.

Competitive and Regulatory Landscape

The move positions SpaceXAI against OpenAI, Anthropic, and enterprise-agent vendors in the emerging market for AI agents, where companies are increasingly marketing systems that can carry out multi-step tasks, use tools, and work persistently. A high-priced Grok Bot tier tests whether consumers and independent professionals will pay agent-level prices.

Regulatory scrutiny could complicate the rollout. The European Commission opened a formal investigation into X in January over whether it adequately assessed and mitigated risks linked to Grok's functions after sexualized manipulated images of women and minors circulated. EU AI Act transparency provisions became applicable in August 2026, and a prohibition on AI systems generating non-consensual sexually explicit content takes effect in December 2026. Higher-tier access to powerful agentic or media-generation features may require stronger safeguards than merely charging a subscription fee.

For households, $8 is close to conventional social-media subscription pricing. At $100 a month, however, the Ultra offer enters a professional-software budget: customers will expect consequential productivity gains, reliable task execution, strong privacy protections, and generous usage limits.

SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The proposal is not yet a confirmed product launch, and final tiers, exact feature limits, and regional pricing could change.
