Business
Shimizu Corporation (1803.T) is a Japan-based general contractor primarily engaged in building construction, civil engineering, and related engineering services. Founded in 1804 and headquartered at 2-16-1 Kyobashi, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, the company provides a comprehensive range of services including planning and consulting; development and financing; design; construction of offices, plants, hospitals, schools, high-rise buildings, residential properties, tunnels, bridges, dams, urban infrastructure, and energy facilities; facility management; maintenance; renovation; engineering and technology solutions; and research and development. It operates through two main segments--construction and investment development--with additional activities in real estate leasing, power generation from wooden biomass, equipment rental, insurance agency services, and landscaping. Shimizu serves domestic and international clients across Asia, Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Africa, employing 11,163 people as of March 31, 2025 (21,286 consolidated). The company constructs manufacturing facilities, solar and wind power projects, environmental clean-up initiatives, and turnkey plants, while also offering engineering, procurement, and construction services for ICT systems and public infrastructure. In overseas operations, Shimizu delivers modern industrial facilities, site selection assistance, and specialized solutions for contamination remediation, waste disposal, wastewater treatment, energy efficiency, and information technology integration. Domestically, it focuses on large-scale projects emphasizing disaster prevention, energy efficiency, and advanced functionality. Recent developments include the February 2025 acquisition of a majority stake in U.S.-based Cross Management Corp., a New York firm specializing in alterations and interiors for financial and retail sectors, to bolster North American high-margin operations under its Overseas In-House Company System launched in 2024. In May 2025, Shimizu commenced a tender offer for shares of The Nippon Road Co., Ltd. (1884.T), a road construction firm, signaling strategic expansion in civil engineering. Additional 2025 milestones encompass participation in a townhouse development project in Indonesia (September), a renovation contract for Kigoma Port in Tanzania (February), and a joint R&D project with The University of Tokyo, Kyocera, and others on AI-native wireless networks (July). The company also advanced share buybacks, completed multiple tranches by September 2025, and initiated research into floating city solutions in the Netherlands as the sole Japanese participant.
