Business
Distribuidora Internacional de Alimentación, S.A. (DIA) operates as a leading Spanish supermarket chain focused on the wholesale and retail distribution of food products, household goods, toiletries, beverages and general consumer items through a network of owned and franchised self-service proximity stores; it also provides ancillary services including leasing of business premises, supplier support, credit operations such as consumer loans, mortgages and commercial financing, as well as issuance and management of credit and debit cards. The company targets everyday low-price shoppers in residential neighborhoods, serving primarily Spain and Argentina with private-label brands emphasizing affordable fresh produce, groceries and personal care items. Founded in 1966 and headquartered in Madrid, Spain, DIA maintains logistic platforms and an omnichannel ecosystem including online sales and loyalty programs like Club Dia. DIA recently executed a 1-for-1,000 reverse stock split effective February 5, 2025, alongside a capital reduction to streamline its share structure while preserving total share capital at approximately 581 million euros divided into 58 million shares; it launched its 2025-29 Strategic Plan 'Growing Every Day' in March 2025, targeting over 300 new proximity stores in Spain by 2029 via franchise expansion, addition of 1 million Club Dia customers, 5-6% online sales growth and inorganic opportunities. The company is investing over 70 million euros through 2029 in logistics modernization, including a 40% equipment increase, new distribution centers in Seville and Leon, and real estate partner developments for six additional facilities. In 2024, DIA completed business simplification by consolidating Spain and Argentina operations, refinancing its debt and advancing profitability after prior divestitures such as 235 stores to Alcampo in 2022-2023 and Clarel to Trinity Group.
