- Enbridge Inc is a North American energy infrastructure company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, founded in 1949. It operates through five primary segments: Liquids Pipelines; Gas Transmission and Midstream; Gas Distribution and Storage; Renewable Power Generation; and Energy Services. The Liquids Pipelines segment owns and operates the world's longest crude oil and liquids pipeline system, transporting various grades of crude oil and other liquid hydrocarbons across Canada and the United States. The Gas Transmission and Midstream segment includes investments in natural gas pipelines and gathering and processing facilities spanning Canada, the United States, and offshore Gulf of Mexico. The Gas Distribution and Storage segment comprises regulated natural gas utility operations serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers primarily in Ontario, Quebec, and several U.S. states. The Renewable Power Generation segment operates wind, solar, geothermal, and waste heat recovery assets in North America. Energy Services offers physical commodity marketing, logistics services, and energy marketing.
Recently, Enbridge completed a $19 billion acquisition of three leading U.S. gas distribution companies, making it the largest natural gas utility franchise owner in North America. In 2024, it placed approximately $5 billion of organic growth projects into service across all business units and sanctioned $8 billion of new projects, including the Tennessee Ridgeline gas system expansion and significant investments in pipeline and storage assets in the Permian Basin and Texas. Enbridge also acquired a majority stake in renewable energy projects such as offshore wind (Hohe See and Albatros) and expanded its renewable pipeline with additions supporting clean hydrogen, renewable natural gas (RNG), and carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives. Additionally, it finalized settlements with key pipeline customers, sold a minority interest in a power partnership, and signed agreements with the Alberta government to accelerate capacity on its liquids pipelines network. These moves reflect Enbridge’s strategic expansion in natural gas distribution and renewable energy, aligning with its broader goal of transitioning to a lower-carbon energy future while maintaining its leadership in energy infrastructure delivery across North America.
