Founded in 1880 as Shanks & McEwan and formerly known as Shanks Group plc, the company rebranded to Renewi plc in February 2017 following its merger with Van Gansewinkel Groep B.V., and it is headquartered in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom.
In a major strategic development, on June 6, 2025, Renewi plc was acquired by a consortium comprising Macquarie Asset Management (via Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 7) and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) through Earth Bidco B.V., delisting its shares from the London Stock Exchange and Euronext Amsterdam and enabling accelerated growth under private ownership. This transaction supports Renewi's "One Renewi" transformation strategy to enhance logistics, processing capabilities, and recycling yields, building on its FY24 achievements of processing over 10 million tonnes of waste with a 66.2% recycling rate.
Recent initiatives include extending collaboration with Stichting OPEN to recycle 30,000 tons of cooling/freezing appliances and 12,500 tons of small household appliances annually in the Netherlands; partnering with Holcim to produce Basalton concrete columns using 100% recycled sand from crushed concrete for dike reinforcement; and Maltha Portugal, part of its glass recycling operations, receiving the PME Excelência Award from IAPMEI in 2025.
