The non-voting financial stake, structured through a landmark letter of intent, will see NVIDIA provide the computing backbone for OpenAI's ambitious plan to deploy 10 gigawatts of next-generation AI datacenter capacity. Each gigawatt of capacity is estimated to be worth $40 billion to $50 billion in potential revenue to the chipmaker, people familiar with the valuation metrics said.

"If OpenAI successfully deploys the full 10 GW using NVIDIA systems, and assuming sustained demand for AI inference, this deal could translate into as much as $500 billion in revenue for NVIDIA over the deployment period," said Benchmark's Cody Acree. He emphasized that the return projection is contingent on the AI market continuing its rapid expansion without significant demand degradation.

The deal's initial phase involves a $10 billion investment for one gigawatt of datacenter capacity, which will utilize NVIDIA's forthcoming Vera Rubin architecture. Hardware deployment is scheduled to begin in late 2026, according to documents reviewed by reporters.

NVIDIA's unprecedented bet comes as the company reported record quarterly revenue of $30 billion, up 122% year-over-year, with data center revenue reaching $26.3 billion. While investors have reacted positively to news of the partnership, sending NVIDIA shares up in after-hours trading, some technology commentators express concern about the scale of capital allocation toward AI infrastructure.
