Business
Laboratorios Farmaceuticos Rovi, S.A. is a pan-European specialty pharmaceutical company engaged in the research, development, manufacturing, and marketing of small molecule and biologic specialty drugs. The company's core products include prescription pharmaceuticals focused on treating venous thrombo-embolic disease, post-menopausal osteoporosis, muscle pain, infections, angina, and osteoarthritis; pharmaceutical products manufactured under contract (contract development and manufacturing organization, CDMO); and diagnostic products such as contrast agents for medical imaging techniques including magnetic resonance, ultrasound, and X-rays. Rovi's flagship internally developed product is a low molecular weight heparin. The company also produces hospital products and non-prescription pharmaceuticals. It operates three manufacturing plants specializing in prefilled syringes and solid oral forms. Geographic operations are primarily in Spain, which accounts for around 77% of sales, with presence also in Italy, Germany, Portugal, France, Greece, and other markets, serving more than 60 countries globally. Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Madrid, Spain, Rovi is a subsidiary of Norbel Inversiones, S.L. Recent major developments include a strategic collaboration announced in October 2025 between Rovi's subsidiary ROVI Pharma Industrial Services (ROIS) and F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., to manufacture a new medicine currently in clinical development from Roche's metabolic and cardiovascular portfolio. This collaboration involves placing a high-speed filling line at Rovi's Madrid facility and is projected to increase Rovi's contract manufacturing business sales by 20% to 25% by 2030 compared to 2024 levels. In the third quarter of 2025, Rovi also signed a ten-year agreement with Sandoz to market Rolcya® (denosumab), a treatment for osteoporosis in Spain, with expected annual sales potential of 10 to 15 million euros. Additionally, in September 2025, Rovi acquired an injectable drug product manufacturing site in Phoenix, Arizona, from Bristol-Myers Squibb, expanding its manufacturing footprint in the United States. Rovi operates mainly within the pharmaceutical industry and focuses on specialized segments including prescription drugs, contract manufacturing (CDMO), diagnostic products, hospital care products, and non-prescription pharmaceuticals. Its business targets hospitals, specialist physicians, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical partners. The company invests heavily in research and development, focusing on innovation in heparin-derived products and extended applications for chronic treatment regimens. With over 2,100 employees, Rovi is recognized for its high manufacturing capacity and technological advancement, positioning Spain as a leader in next-generation pharmaceutical production. In 2024, its operational revenue totaled approximately 763.7 million euros, with 427.5 million euros generated from specialty pharmaceuticals and 336.2 million euros from contract manufacturing. Rovi maintains a diversified product portfolio with a balanced revenue stream from both product sales and services. Its strategic expansions, partnerships, and acquisitions in recent years reflect a robust growth strategy in pharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing capabilities.
