Business
Hess Corporation (NYSE: HES; LSE: 0J50) operates as a global independent energy company focused on the exploration, development, production, transportation, purchase and sale of crude oil, natural gas liquids and natural gas. The company maintains industry-leading positions in the Bakken shale play in North Dakota; deepwater Gulf of Mexico; and natural gas production and supply to Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand; while participating in significant exploration and appraisal activities offshore Guyana, Suriname, Canada and Libya. Founded in 1933 by Leon Hess in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and headquartered at 1185 Avenue of the Americas in New York City, Hess transformed in 2014 into a pure-play exploration and production entity by divesting downstream assets including refineries and retail gas stations. In July 2025, Chevron Corporation completed its $53 billion all-stock acquisition of Hess, integrating its high-value assets such as the 30% stake in Guyana's Stabroek Block--with over 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent in discovered recoverable resources--alongside Bakken shale holdings of 463,000 net acres, Gulf of Mexico production averaging 31,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, and Southeast Asia natural gas operations yielding 57,000 barrels of oil equivalent daily; the deal unlocks $1 billion in projected annual run-rate cost synergies by year-end 2025 and positions the combined entity for enhanced free cash flow and production growth into the 2030s.
