Business
Corning Incorporated develops, manufactures, and markets advanced materials including specialty glass, ceramics, and optical technologies for industrial, scientific, and consumer applications. Founded in 1851 and headquartered in Corning, New York, the company operates five principal business segments: Optical Communications, which provides optical fiber, cables, hardware, and connectivity solutions including carrier network solutions, enterprise network solutions, and broadband products; Display Technologies, which supplies glass substrates for flat panel displays, notably for televisions, monitors, laptops, and tablets; Specialty Materials, which offers damage-resistant cover glass such as Gorilla Glass for mobile consumer electronics, cover materials for wearable devices, and high-purity fused silica and ultra-low expansion glass for semiconductor lithography; Environmental Technologies, which produces ceramic substrates and particulate filters for automotive emissions control systems in gasoline and diesel engines; and Life Sciences, which delivers consumables, equipment, and services including labware, cell culture products, and bioprocess solutions for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academic research. Corning maintains manufacturing facilities across 15 countries, serving global markets in telecommunications, consumer electronics, automotive, display, and life sciences industries through direct sales and distributors. In March 2025, Corning upgraded its Springboard Plan, now targeting more than $4 billion in additional annualized sales and 20% operating margins by end-2026, reflecting strong performance in key segments. Recent developments include a multi-year agreement valued over $1 billion with AT&T announced in October 2024 to supply next-generation fiber connectivity solutions for network expansion, and up to $32 million in CHIPS Act funding awarded in late 2024 for expanding high-purity fused silica and extreme ultra-low expansion glass production at its Canton, New York facility to bolster the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. The company, listed on the London Stock Exchange under ticker 0R2X.L, reported $13.1 billion in 2024 GAAP sales and employs approximately 61,200 people worldwide.
