Business
Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Limited is a multinational pharmaceutical company focused on manufacturing and marketing post-patent branded medicines and generics for hospital and consumer markets; its core products and services encompass injectable pharmaceuticals including anaesthetics, anticoagulants, antithrombotics, analgesics and hormone replacements, alongside prescription and over-the-counter medicines in forms such as steriles, oral solids, liquids, semi-solids, biologicals and active pharmaceutical ingredients. The company operates 24 manufacturing facilities across 15 sites in more than 48 countries and territories, serving patients in over 115 countries with approvals from regulators including the US FDA, Australian TGA and European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines. Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Durban, South Africa (uMhlanga), Aspen maintains a presence in emerging and developed markets across Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, the Americas and Australasia through subsidiaries like Aspen Global Incorporated and Aspen Oss BV. Recent strategic developments include advancing its generic semaglutide GLP-1 programme for type 2 diabetes and obesity treatment with production onboarding at sterile facilities in South Africa and France, alongside regulatory progress on Serum Institute paediatric vaccines for African markets and a long-term distribution agreement with Boehringer Ingelheim for its South African portfolio effective September 2025. In 2024, Aspen secured a €500 million loan from IFC, Proparco, DEG and DFC to bolster vaccine, insulin and essential medicine production and distribution in Africa, while pursuing organic growth in commercial pharmaceuticals including Mounjaro Kwikpen approval in South Africa. The company continues targeted product pipeline development, reshapes its China business via the Sandoz acquisition and anticipates mid-single-digit revenue growth with stronger EBITDA in FY2026.
