Business
Aviva plc is a British multinational insurance company headquartered in London, England, and tracing its origins to 1696 through predecessor entities including the Hand in Hand Fire & Life Insurance Society. The company serves approximately 25.2 million customers primarily in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, where it ranks as the largest general insurer and a leading provider of life and pensions in the UK, and the second-largest general insurer in Canada; it also maintains international investments in India and China. Aviva provides a diversified range of products and services encompassing general insurance including motor, home, travel, commercial lines via Probitas, and the Quotemehappy brand; life insurance, critical illness, income protection, and health insurance; retirement solutions such as pensions, bulk purchase annuities, individual annuities, and equity release; long-term savings; protection; and fund management through Aviva Investors, which oversees £253 billion in assets under management as of August 2025. In recent developments, Aviva completed its £3.7 billion acquisition of Direct Line Group on 1 July 2025, integrating prominent personal lines insurance brands and accelerating its capital-light earnings strategy toward over 75% by 2028, with upgraded cost synergies of £225 million by 2028 and at least £500 million in capital synergies by end-2026; the company also announced a new multi-year partnership with NFU Mutual for rural insurance distribution, completed a £700 million buy-in deal with the ABB Plan in August 2025, and raised three-year financial targets including 11% operating EPS CAGR through 2028, over 20% IFRS return on equity by 2028, and more than £7 billion in cumulative cash remittances from 2026-2028.
