Previously, the company developed, produced and marketed autologous cell therapies for the regenerative treatment of articular cartilage defects in joints, including its flagship products Spherox and Chondrosphere, which utilize patients' own cartilage cells (autologous chondrocytes) in spheroid technology for minimally invasive repair of knee cartilage damage following trauma or degeneration; these prescription-only medicinal products were authorized by the European Medicines Agency for distribution across Europe since 2017 and used in over 200 clinics with more than 17,000 patients treated. Founded in 1993 and headquartered in Teltow, Germany, co.don AG operated manufacturing facilities meeting EU-GMP standards in Teltow and Leipzig, serving orthopedic surgeons and hospitals primarily in Germany and the European Union through subsidiaries and partnerships in countries including the Netherlands, Austria and the United Kingdom. In January 2023, ReLive Biotechnologies Ltd acquired 100% of co.don AG's core assets, including global patent rights to Spherox and Chondrosphere, manufacturing facilities and quality systems, via its German subsidiary CO.DON GmbH, which took over all business operations and consolidated production to the Teltow site while maintaining administration in Leipzig; CO.DON GmbH, now a ReLive company, continues development and commercialization efforts, including participation in an EU-funded project for 3D bioprinting in tissue regeneration as of February 2025.
