Business
Coles Group Limited is a leading Australian retailer primarily engaged in the operation of supermarkets and liquor stores. Its core products and services include retailing fresh food, groceries, and general merchandise through its national chain of over 851 Coles Supermarkets, as well as liquor retailing via three major banners: Liquorland, First Choice Liquor Market, and Vintage Cellars. The company also provides online grocery shopping and delivery services, including same-day and overnight options through Coles Online. Beyond retail, Coles offers financial products under Coles Financial Services and operates a loyalty program in partnership with flybuys. Founded in 1914 and headquartered in Hawthorn East, Victoria, Coles Group employs approximately 115,000 people and operates across Australia. Recent major company changes include the completion and ramp-up of key automated distribution centers (ADC) and customer fulfillment centers (CFCs) that enhance supply chain efficiency. In 2024, Coles launched an online pet retailer Swaggle, expanded digital offerings, and implemented technological innovations such as Skip Scan loss prevention technology, Smart Gates, and Bottom of Trolley technology in numerous stores to reduce losses and improve customer experience. The company has also focused on sustainability, achieving a 1.5% reduction in combined Scope 1 and 2 emissions from the previous year and a 34.5% reduction since baseline measurements. Marketing initiatives like the "Great Value, Hands Down" campaign and "Great Lengths for Quality" further strengthened customer engagement. These developments reflect Coles' strategic shift toward enhanced automation, digital growth, sustainability, and quality improvement while maintaining its position in Australia's competitive retail sector.
