Business
iShares Global Agriculture Index ETF (COW.TO) seeks to replicate, to the extent possible, the performance of the Manulife Investment Management Global Agriculture Index, net of expenses; the ETF invests primarily in equity securities of companies involved in the agriculture sector, including producers of fertilizers, agricultural chemicals, farm machinery and parts, seeds, animal feeds, and packaged foods and meats, as classified by GICS; under normal market conditions, holdings comprise global equities from developed and emerging markets across the full market capitalization spectrum, with top exposures to companies such as Corteva Inc. (agricultural chemicals and seeds), Deere & Co. (farm machinery), Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. (processed foods and commodities), Mosaic Co. (fertilizers), Ingredion Inc. (starches and sweeteners), Tyson Foods Inc. (packaged meats), and Pilgrim's Pride Corp. (poultry), among others; as of April 30, 2025, the portfolio includes 36 holdings with 81.6% U.S. allocation, followed by Switzerland, Canada, Italy, Brazil, Argentina, and Israel; the ETF trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canadian dollars, with a management expense ratio (MER) of 0.71% and semi-annual distributions. Launched on December 19, 2007 and managed by BlackRock Asset Management Canada Limited (headquartered in Toronto, Ontario), the fund provides investors with targeted exposure to global agriculture-related businesses, serving institutional and retail investors seeking long-term capital appreciation through thematic equity investment; the underlying index, provided by Manulife Investment Management, is rebalanced periodically to reflect factor-based rankings including balance sheet strength, earnings growth, price momentum, profitability, and valuations, using an optimizer for optimal weighting. No major acquisitions, partnerships, funding rounds, name changes, or structural reorganizations have been reported for the ETF in the last 1-2 years; ongoing portfolio adjustments reflect quarterly index rebalancing and market dynamics, with recent capital gains distribution estimates announced by BlackRock Canada in November 2025 for reinvestment; as of April 30, 2025, assets under management stood at $245.6 million, with average daily trading volume of 9,192 units over the prior 12 months.
