Business
Companhia Paranaense de Energia - COPEL generates, transmits, distributes, and trades electric energy predominantly in the state of Paraná, Brazil. The company’s main products and services include electricity generation primarily from hydroelectric plants with a renewable energy focus; electricity transmission through a high-voltage grid of approximately 10,000 km; and electricity distribution serving over 5 million residential, commercial, industrial, and rural consumers exclusively within Paraná. COPEL also offers energy trading services, including power purchase and sale agreements, renewable energy certificates, consulting in the free energy market, and support services for small generators and traders. The company’s operations emphasize service quality, grid modernization, automation, and loss reduction in its distribution network. COPEL’s latest major changes include strategic divestments in non-core assets, such as the sale of Compagas and UEGA concessions to sharpen its focus on renewable energy and core electricity business. It completed the acquisition of Neoenergia’s stake in the Baixo Iguaçu Hydroelectric Plant and consolidated ownership of key assets like the Mata de Santa Genebra transmission company and the Mauá Hydroelectric Plant, optimizing operational synergies. In 2024, COPEL invested R$ 2.2 billion in modernizing, expanding, and automating its distribution network to improve efficiency and service quality. The company launched its first share buyback program effective until 2026 as part of capital allocation optimization. COPEL’s portfolio expansion also includes renewable energy growth aligned with sustainability goals. Founded in 1954 and headquartered in Curitiba, Brazil, COPEL is one of the largest electric power companies in Brazil, operating in the generation, transmission, distribution, and commercialization of electric energy. The company serves regulated and free energy markets primarily in Paraná through subsidiaries such as Copel Geração e Transmissão S.A. It operates with a strategic focus on decarbonization, innovation, and operational excellence, leveraging a robust asset base that includes hydroelectric, wind, and other renewable generation facilities. Its customer base spans multiple sectors including agribusiness, commerce, industry, public sector, and energy trading. Recent initiatives reflect COPEL’s commitment to sustainable growth and shareholder value creation through focused investments and portfolio management.
