Business
Harland & Wolff Group Holdings Plc is a United Kingdom-based multisite fabrication company operating in the maritime and offshore engineering industry through shipbuilding, ship repair, and fabrication services; it provides technical services including consultancy, basic design, and detailed engineering; fabrication and construction; repair and maintenance; in-service support; conversion; and decommissioning across five key markets comprising defence, energy, cruise and ferry, renewables, and commercial, with facilities in Belfast (Northern Ireland), Appledore, Methil, and Arnish (Scotland). Founded in 1861 by Edward Harland and Gustav Wilhelm Wolff and headquartered in London, the company maintains one of Europe's largest drydocks in Belfast and serves clients primarily in the United Kingdom while targeting international opportunities in offshore wind, naval support, and energy infrastructure. In January 2025, Navantia UK completed its acquisition of Harland & Wolff's four shipyards following the company's second administration in five years, protecting over 1,000 jobs and committing to increased investments exceeding £77 million to modernize facilities for projects including three Fleet Solid Support vessels for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary as part of the Team Resolute consortium with Navantia and BMT; prior changes encompassed the 2021 rebranding from InfraStrata plc, acquisitions of Appledore in 2020 and Methil/Arnish yards in 2021, and completion of its first newbuild barge since 2003 in 2023.
