Business
Hapag-Lloyd AG is a leading global liner shipping company primarily engaged in container shipping and transportation services. The company operates a fleet of approximately 300 container ships with a total transport capacity of around 12.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Its core products and services include global containerized freight transportation by sea; inland container transportation via truck and rail; and container terminal operations and logistics services under its Terminal & Infrastructure segment branded as Hanseatic Global Terminals. Hapag-Lloyd's portfolio includes container shipping, terminal services, and related logistics covering major global trade routes including Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. The company targets customers requiring international freight solutions across industries and geographic markets. Founded in 1847, Hapag-Lloyd is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. In the past two years, Hapag-Lloyd has expanded significantly through strategic acquisitions and business developments. In 2023, it completed the 100% acquisition of SM SAAM's terminal business and logistics operations, adding ten terminals across North, Central, and South America, reinforcing its footprint in the Latin American market. It also acquired minority stakes in Italy-based Spinelli Group and India-based J M Baxi Ports & Logistics Limited, further consolidating its terminal and inland transport services. In 2024, Hapag-Lloyd launched “Live Position,” the first dry container tracking product offering real-time shipment tracking using IoT technology, enhancing transparency and customer decision-making. Recently in 2025, its terminal division Hanseatic Global Terminals acquired a majority stake in the French terminal operator CNMP LH in Le Havre, France. Additionally, Hapag-Lloyd signed contracts to build 24 new, low-emission container ships with dual-fuel engines, biomethane capability, and ammonia-ready technology, scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2029, to modernize and expand its fleet sustainably. Hapag-Lloyd operates primarily in the Freight & Logistics industry with significant liner shipping and terminal infrastructure segments. Its services cater to global shipping customers including manufacturers, retailers, and freight forwarders. The company maintains a diverse geographic presence with key operations and terminals in Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa, supported by strategic investments in major ports like Wilhelmshaven, Hamburg, Tangier, Damietta, and more. The company reported revenues of approximately €19.1 billion for the 2024 financial year and employs around 16,900 people globally. Hapag-Lloyd continues to pursue its Strategy 2030 focused on growth, fleet modernization, decarbonization, digital innovation, and expanding terminal infrastructure to strengthen its competitive position worldwide.
