Business
Soitec S.A. Soitec SA designs and manufactures engineered semiconductor substrates using proprietary SmartCut and SmartStacking technologies, serving the electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and photonics industries. The company produces a diverse portfolio of high-performance materials, including radio frequency silicon-on-insulator (RF-SOI) substrates for 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity in smartphones; fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) wafers for low-power processors in mobile devices, automotive radar, and IoT applications; piezoelectric-on-insulator (POI) substrates for radiofrequency filters; RF gallium nitride (GaN) for power amplifiers; SmartSiC silicon carbide substrates for electric vehicles and industrial power electronics; auto power-SOI for integrated power ICs; photonics-SOI for optical networks and datacom; imager SOI for near-infrared sensors in AR/VR and facial recognition; partially depleted SOI (PD-SOI) for high-performance computing, AI, and servers; and MEMS-SOI for sensors. Headquartered in Bernin, France, and founded in 1992 as a CEA-Leti spin-off, Soitec operates production facilities in France and Singapore, with R&D centers and sales offices across Europe, the United States, Asia—including China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan—and generates nearly all revenue internationally from markets such as smartphones, servers, electric/autonomous vehicles, connected objects, and industrial automation. Recent developments include a September 2025 financing agreement with the European Investment Bank to support R&D; strategic partnerships with CEA-Leti on FD-SOI for automotive cybersecurity and with PSMC on ultra-thin TLT technology for 3D stacking; a 2024 framework agreement with MIT's Microsystems Technology Laboratories for photonics and new materials; reorganization of its Smart Devices division into Edge & Cloud AI to boost photonics growth; divestitures of Dolphin Design's IP assets to Jolt Capital and ASIC business to NanoXplore to refocus on core substrates; and expansion of SmartSiC qualifications with over 35 customers, including major automotive semiconductor players and Chinese firms, alongside production optimizations in Bernin and Singapore.
