Business
Thungela Resources Limited engages in the production and export of high-quality thermal coal from operations in South Africa and Australia. The company owns interests in seven mining operations, including underground mines such as Zibulo colliery, Goedehoop colliery, Greenside colliery; opencast mines such as Isibonelo colliery, Khwezela colliery, Mafube colliery, Rietvlei colliery in South Africa's Mpumalanga province; and an 85% interest in the Ensham underground mine in Queensland, Australia, which it increased to 100% ownership in March 2025 through acquisition of the remaining stake from co-investors. Thungela exports thermal coal primarily to markets in India, Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa, with additional sales of industrial and domestic coal in South Africa. Founded in 1945 and spun off from Anglo American in 2021, the company is headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa. Recent developments include the ramp-up of export production from the Elders project at Greenside, ongoing advancement of the Zibulo North Shaft expansion project on schedule for completion in 2026, initiation of a Lephalale Coal Bed Methane project, restructuring at Goedehoop and Isibonelo operations approaching end-of-life in 2025, completion of a R328 million share buyback announced in March 2025, distribution of R1.4 billion in dividends during the first half of 2025, and contribution of R188 million to its green fund for environmental liabilities. Thungela maintains a fatality-free operation for 27 consecutive months as of June 2025 and focuses on cost competitiveness amid volatile coal prices, with export saleable production guidance upheld for the full year despite weather and geological challenges.
