Business
Yancoal Australia Ltd (ASX: YAL) produces and markets premium thermal and metallurgical coal from mines across New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. The company owns or operates eight producing coal mines including Moolarben, Mount Thorley Warkworth, Hunter Valley Operations, Ashton, Yarrabee, Cameby Downs, Middlemount and Premier Coal; its thermal coal primarily serves electricity generation for power utilities while metallurgical coal supports steel production, with products exported mainly to Asian markets such as Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan and others. Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Sydney, Yancoal employs over 6,000 people predominantly from regional communities and maintains majority ownership by Yankuang Energy Group as a dual-listed entity on the ASX and HKEX. In 2025, Yancoal acquired an additional 3.75% stake in the Moolarben thermal coal joint venture for $110.5 million, increasing its ownership to 98.75% and enhancing operational control while preserving ties with South Korean power company partners holding the remaining 1.25%; the company also renewed a coal sales framework agreement with POSCO for 2025-2027 and continues leveraging strong operational performance for strategic asset consolidation.
