Business
Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Company Limited (0338.HK) is one of China's largest integrated refining and petrochemical enterprises and a holding subsidiary of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec). The company, founded in 1972 as Shanghai Petrochemical Complex and restructured in 1993, is headquartered in Jinshan District, Shanghai, China, spanning 9.4 square kilometers; it was the first Chinese firm listed on the Shanghai, Hong Kong, and New York stock exchanges. It processes crude oil into refined products including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, naphtha, liquefied petroleum gas, heavy oil, petroleum coke, asphalt, and sulfur; intermediate petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, toluene, paraxylene, acrylonitrile, ethylene glycol, ethylene oxide, vinyl acetate, and C5 fractions; synthetic resins and plastics encompassing polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyester; synthetic fiber raw materials and polymers like polyester chips, polyvinyl alcohol, acrylic polymers; and synthetic fibers including acrylic staple, acrylic top, polyester staple, and polyester industrial yarn; the company also engages in petrochemical trading, utilities, environmental services, and property leasing primarily within China, with exports abroad. The company maintains substantial capacities, including 16 million tons/year comprehensive crude oil processing, 700,000 tons/year ethylene, 4.07 million tons/year organic chemical raw materials, 908,000 tons/year synthetic resins, 525,000 tons/year synthetic fiber raw materials, and 35,500 tons/year synthetic fibers. In recent developments, Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical plans a CNY21.3 billion comprehensive technological transformation and quality upgrade for oil refining and new materials facilities announced in early 2025; advances key projects like thermal power unit efficiency improvements now in full civil construction, elastomer facilities achieving mechanical completion, a national hazardous chemicals emergency rescue base with finalized basic design, and a operational carbon fiber composite materials experimental base; progresses carbon fiber initiatives with the 48K large tow phase I meeting performance benchmarks, high-strength medium-modulus production technology, and 24K fiber reaching T700 level to fill domestic gaps; and intends to enter a technology research and development framework agreement while holding a 2025 extraordinary general meeting for strategic investments.
