Business
Nutrien Ltd. provides crop inputs and services to growers worldwide through its integrated network of production, distribution and ag retail facilities. The company operates in four main segments: Nutrien Ag Solutions (Retail), which distributes crop nutrients, crop protection products, seeds and merchandise; offers agronomic services including product application, soil testing, crop scouting, precision agriculture and financing via Nutrien Financial; Potash, which produces granular and standard potash products; Nitrogen, which supplies ammonia, urea, environmentally smart nitrogen (ESN), nitrogen solutions, nitrates and sulfates; and Phosphate, which manufactures solid and liquid fertilizers such as monoammonium phosphate (MAP) and superphosphoric acid (SPA), along with industrial and feed products. Nutrien produces and distributes approximately 27 million tonnes annually of potash, nitrogen and phosphate for agricultural, industrial and feed customers, serving over 600,000 accounts through about 2,000 retail locations globally. Founded in 2018 through the merger of PotashCorp and Agrium, Nutrien maintains dual headquarters in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (registered office) and Calgary, Alberta, with approximately 25,500 employees operating in major growing regions across North America, Latin America, Australia and other international markets. In recent strategic developments, Nutrien announced in September 2025 an agreement to sell its 50% equity interest in Profertil S.A. for approximately $0.6 billion as part of portfolio simplification efforts, bringing total divestiture proceeds to about $0.9 billion over the past year; initiated a review of strategic alternatives for its Phosphate business, potentially including sales or partnerships; and completed a controlled shutdown of its Trinidad Nitrogen facility in October 2025 due to gas supply and port access issues. The company also selected Longview, Washington, for a new potash export terminal with 5-6 million tonnes annual capacity, announced in November 2025, and continues advancing low-cost brownfield expansions in potash and nitrogen to reach 18 million tonnes potash capability by 2025 while returning $1.2 billion to shareholders through dividends and repurchases in the first nine months of 2025.
