Business
Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells a broad range of iron and steel products, including hot-rolled steel such as wear-resistant steel, clad-rolled flat steel, protection steel, and automotive steel sheets; cold-rolled products such as automotive steel sheets, hot-dip galvanized steel for HVAC ductwork, tinplate, tin-free steel, grain-oriented electrical steel, prepainted steel sheets, and chromate-free anti-fingerprinting electrogalvanized steel sheets; heavy plates; seamless pipes and tubes; bars and wire rods; carbon steel products encompassing hot- and cold-rolled steel coils, coated sheets, beams, concrete reinforcing bars, merchant steel, machine wires, sawing wire, sheet piling, and public transport rails; stainless steel products including flat and long products as well as precision stainless steel strips; and special products such as nickel alloy flat products and stainless steel special plates. The company serves industries including automotive, home appliances, petrochemical, engineering machinery, construction, shipbuilding, pressure vessels, bridges, oil and natural gas transmission, aeronautics, and packaging, with primary operations in China and exports to over 40 countries including Japan, South Korea, the United States, and the European Union. Founded in 1978 and headquartered at 885 Fujin Road, Baoshan District, Shanghai, China, Baoshan Iron & Steel operates major steel plants in Shanghai, Nanjing, Zhanjiang, and Wuhan, and functions as a subsidiary of China Baowu Steel Group. Recent developments include Baosteel Metals' acquisition in 2025 of additional shares in Baowu Magnesium Industry for approximately $82 million, increasing its stake from 21.53% to 26.53% to bolster lightweight materials capabilities; progression on a $4 billion steel plant joint venture in Saudi Arabia, registered in November 2024 with ongoing optimization; and an expansion in July 2024 of investment in a Saudi steel plate joint venture to $1 billion from $437.5 million, targeting 15 million metric tons annual steel plate capacity.
