Business
Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad (Astro) is Malaysia's leading content and entertainment company, providing pay television, radio broadcasting, broadband services, digital media, and advertising solutions. The company offers core products and services including Astro Pay-TV with hybrid 4K UHD Ultra and HD Ulti Boxes delivering over 100,000 on-demand videos and 16 integrated streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar; entry-level NJOI satellite TV; millennial-focused OTT platform sooka; Astro Fibre and Astro BIZFibre high-speed broadband with WiFi-6 technology; Malaysia's No. 1 radio network encompassing brands like ERA, HITZ, MY, and RAAGA; content creation, aggregation, and distribution featuring local dramas, Astro Originals, and live sports; addressable advertising combining TV and digital targeting; and talent management via Rocketfuel. Founded in 1996 and headquartered at the All Asia Broadcast Centre in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, Astro serves 5.3 million homes representing 67% of Malaysian TV households, 8,400 enterprises, 18.2 million weekly radio listeners, and 15.6 million monthly digital visitors, primarily targeting Malaysian consumers across all demographics with a focus on local content dominance. In recent developments, Astro launched three affordable Astro One bundles—Entertainment, Sports, and Epic—in FY25 to enhance accessibility and drive gross customer additions up 17% year-over-year in Q1FY26, alongside expanding aggregated streaming apps and pursuing digital expansion to attract 16 million new individual users. The company partnered with Amagi and AWS in May 2024 to modernize playout and origination systems for linear channels and disaster recovery on cloud infrastructure, optimizing operations ahead of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region launch. Astro also introduced KULT, a digital marketing venture, recommitted over RM300 million to local content investment in FY24, and strengthened ESG efforts including a Forward Faster Louder programme with the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia-Brunei, earning top FTSE Russell ESG rankings and 16 Asian Academy Creative Awards in 2025. These initiatives reflect strategic shifts toward cost reduction, hybrid streaming, broadband growth, and adjacent revenue streams amid industry challenges like piracy and subsidy rationalization.
