Business
Sompo Holdings, Inc. (8630.T) operates as a diversified insurance holding company primarily engaged in property and casualty insurance, life insurance, nursing care, and related financial services. Established on April 1, 2010, and headquartered at 26-1, Nishi-Shinjuku 1-chome, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-8338, Japan, the company manages subsidiaries focused on domestic non-life insurance underwriting including automobile, fire, marine cargo, and liability coverages; direct insurance products; overseas insurance operations through Sompo International encompassing specialty insurance and reinsurance in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America; domestic life insurance via Sompo Himawari Life featuring Insurhealth hybrid products combining insurance with health services; nursing care and seniors services through Sompo Care providing at-home care, facilities, and health support; and other segments such as asset management via Sompo Asset Management, risk management, assistance, warranty services, and digital health solutions. Sompo Holdings serves individual consumers, commercial clients, and institutional customers across Japan and international markets including the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, and Brazil, with a portfolio balanced between commercial (51%), consumer (35%), and reinsurance (14%) lines generating over $30 billion in gross written premiums globally. In recent strategic developments, Sompo Holdings announced in August 2025 the $3.5 billion acquisition of Aspen Insurance Holdings, a leading specialty insurer and reinsurer with $4.6 billion in annual gross written premiums, through a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sompo International; the deal, offering $37.50 per share in cash at a 35.6% premium, aims to enhance global scale, portfolio diversification, and access to Aspen's Capital Markets platform managing over $2 billion in alternative reinsurance assets, with completion expected in the first half of 2026 pending regulatory approvals. Additionally, effective April 1, 2025, the company reorganized into two global segments—Sompo Property and Casualty (re)insurance (Sompo P&C) and Sompo Wellbeing—to streamline operations, accelerate capital management, foster cross-group collaboration, and address challenges like Japan's aging population through integrated health, nursing, and retirement finance solutions.
