Business
Arch Resources Inc, formerly Arch Coal Inc, operates as a leading US producer of metallurgical coal for the global steel industry and thermal coal for power generation and industrial applications. The company mines, processes, and markets premium high-vol A and high-vol B coking coals from its large-scale underground longwall operations, including the Leer, Leer South, Beckley, and Mountain Laurel mines in West Virginia and Virginia; low-sulfur thermal coal from surface mines in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Colorado; and smaller volumes of other bituminous coals, with products sold to steel producers, electric utilities, and industrial facilities worldwide through an extensive logistics network encompassing rail, barge, and export terminals on the East Coast, Gulf Coast, and West Coast. Arch Resources conducts operations across key US coal basins in Appalachia, the Powder River Basin, and Western Bituminous regions, controlling significant coal reserves estimated at over 1 billion tons; it was founded in 1969 as Arch Mineral Corporation through a partnership involving Ashland Oil and the H.L. Hunt family, became publicly traded in 1997 following its merger with Ashland Coal, rebranded to Arch Resources in 2020 to emphasize its metallurgical focus after exiting most thermal assets by 2023, and maintains headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. In January 2025, Arch Resources completed a merger of equals with CONSOL Energy Inc to form Core Natural Resources Inc, a premier North American coal producer with 11 mines across six states, enhanced export capacity of approximately 25 million tonnes per annum, ownership stakes in East Coast terminals, and strategic port access, generating projected annual synergies of $110 million to $140 million from logistics optimization, coal blending, procurement efficiencies, and overhead reductions; the combined entity trades under the ticker CNR on the NYSE, with Arch common shares ceasing trading and ARRHW representing the legacy Series A warrants exercisable into Core Natural Resources shares subject to merger adjustment terms.
