METRO AG operates as an international food wholesaler specializing in business-to-business supply to professional customers including hotels, restaurants, caterers, bars, cafes, canteens and small independent traders such as kiosks and grocery stores; it offers a multichannel model combining brick-and-mortar wholesale stores under the METRO and MAKRO brands with out-of-store delivery services, food service distribution via dedicated depots and delivery companies including Aviludo, Caterite, Classic Fine Foods, Johan i Hallen & Bergfalk, Pro a Pro, Pro a Pro Spain and R express, digital platforms such as the METRO MARKETS online marketplace for professional equipment and the DISH platform for hospitality applications, and own brands like METRO Chef for gastronomy food products, METRO Professional for tools and appliances, and METRO Premium for high-end food items. The company maintains a network of 623 stores across 21 countries primarily in Europe and Asia, supplemented by 102 food service distribution depots and delivery-only operations in 12 countries; it targets small and medium-sized enterprises with wide product assortments emphasizing quality, sustainability, local sourcing and competitive pricing. Founded in 1964 and headquartered in Dusseldorf, Germany, METRO AG functions as the central holding company overseeing group management and administrative functions. In recent developments, the company renewed its strategic IT partnership with Wipro in June 2025 for cloud migration, data management, AI-enabled services and digital transformation supporting its sCore growth strategy, having already migrated 80% of on-premise infrastructure to the cloud since 2021; it also faces a takeover bid from EP Global Commerce GmbH, controlled by Daniel Kretinsky, launched in February 2025 to acquire and delist the company with alignment to its ongoing investment initiatives; additionally, METRO reported positive sales growth of 5.3% in local currency for the first half of fiscal 2024/25, driven by a 2.6% increase in store-based wholesale to EUR 11.4 billion.
