Business
BlackRock Event Driven Equity Fund Investor A (BALPX) is an open-end mutual fund that invests primarily in equity and equity-related securities of companies undergoing transformative corporate events, including announced mergers and acquisitions, spinoffs and split-offs, financial or strategic restructurings, management changes, and other catalysts; the fund employs long and short positions in developed market companies across market capitalizations and sectors, while investing opportunistically across the capital structure using fixed income instruments and derivatives to hedge or enhance returns. Launched on December 19, 2007, and managed by Mark R. McKenna since May 6, 2015, the fund is part of BlackRock, Inc., the world's largest asset manager founded in 1988 and headquartered at 50 Hudson Yards in New York City. It targets institutional and individual investors seeking event-driven strategies in the alternatives space, with a focus on U.S.-domiciled operations available for sale in the United States; as of mid-2025, the fund maintains significant allocations to cash (51%), U.S. stocks (21%), U.S. bonds (16%), and non-U.S. equities (9%), alongside top holdings such as Precision Castparts Corp., Time Warner Cable Inc., and Cytec Industries Inc., with notable short positions in Schlumberger NV and Charter Communications Inc.. In recent years, the fund has benefited from specific event outcomes, including positive contributions from the Novo Nordisk/Catalent merger that closed in December 2024, as well as investments tied to General Electric's separation into GE Vernova and GE Aerospace amid strong order announcements and earnings. At the broader BlackRock level, the parent company has pursued aggressive expansion through major acquisitions, completing the $12 billion purchase of private credit firm HPS Investment Partners in 2025 to bolster private financing solutions, alongside the $12.5 billion acquisition of Global Infrastructure Partners in late 2024 and a $3.2 billion deal for alternative data provider Preqin. These strategic moves reflect BlackRock's shift toward integrated public-private market platforms, enhancing capabilities in alternatives that indirectly support event-driven strategies like BALPX amid rising M&A activity and regulatory tailwinds. The fund, with approximately $4.7 billion in total net assets and a net expense ratio of 1.51%, remains positioned with 41% in hard catalysts, 36% in soft catalysts, and 23% in credit as of June 30, 2025.
