Business
Virtus LifeSci Biotech Clinical Trials ETF (BBC) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks investment results corresponding, before fees and expenses, to the price and yield performance of the LifeSci Biotechnology Clinical Trials Index, which measures the equity market performance of U.S. exchange-listed biotechnology companies with a primary product offering—typically a lead drug—in Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3 clinical trials prior to FDA approval or commercial production. The fund employs a passive, equally weighted investment strategy, with semi-annual rebalances and reconstitutions on June 15 and December 15 to ensure balanced exposure to select clinical-stage biotech firms, ranging from entrepreneurial startups to larger developers; it excludes companies with lead candidates still in preclinical or research stages, providing targeted access to high-growth potential in the dynamic biotechnology sector. Launched on December 16, 2014, and listed on NYSE Arca, BBC is managed by portfolio managers Matthew B. Brown and Seth Kadushin of Virtus Investment Advisers, LLC (the adviser), with index provision by New York-based LifeSci Index Partners, LLC; the fund maintains a total expense ratio of 0.79% and had approximately $30 million in net assets as of late 2025. Originally launched under BioShares as the BioShares Biotechnology Clinical Trials Fund, the ETF underwent a rebranding by Virtus ETF Solutions, which shifted its primary listing from NASDAQ to NYSE Arca while maintaining continuous trading availability for existing shareholders. Virtus Investment Partners, Inc., the parent entity headquartered in Hartford, Connecticut and independent since its 2009 spin-off, has expanded its ETF lineup aggressively, achieving a record $0.9 billion in Q3 2025 sales amid broader strategic initiatives including debt refinancing that reduced net debt by 53% to $29 million, enabling $45 million in investments such as CLO sponsorship and equity stakes in managers, alongside the launch of new offerings like the Virtus AlphaSimplex Global Macro ETF. These efforts reflect Virtus' multi-boutique model and focus on ETF innovation, with BBC benefiting from enhanced distribution partnerships and operational efficiencies as part of a 21-fund actively managed ETF platform. The fund targets investors seeking concentrated exposure to U.S. biotech clinical trial innovation, with top holdings as of Q3 2025 including Celcuity Inc., uniQure NV, and Rapport Therapeutics Inc., and operates primarily within the U.S. market through its underlying index constituents.
