Business
BlackRock Energy and Resources Trust (NYSE: BGR) is a closed-end fund that seeks total return through a combination of current income, current gains, and long-term capital appreciation by investing, under normal market conditions, at least 80% of its total assets in equity securities of energy and natural resources companies and equity derivatives with exposure to the energy and natural resources industry. The Trust invests directly in such securities or synthetically through derivatives, including an option writing strategy to enhance dividend yield; its portfolio typically includes common stocks, American Depositary Receipts, master limited partnerships, and other equity-linked instruments issued by companies engaged in energy exploration, production, refining, distribution, related services, metals and mining, and chemicals. Top holdings as of late 2025 include Exxon Mobil Corp (approximately 20%), Shell plc (11%), Chevron Corp (10%), TotalEnergies SE (7%), and others such as Cheniere Energy Inc, TC Energy Corp, Williams Companies Inc, and ConocoPhillips, with a gross expense ratio of 1.23%, comprising a 1.10% management fee and 0.13% other expenses. The Trust, formed on December 23, 2004 and domiciled in the United States with administrative offices at 100 Bellevue Parkway, Wilmington, Delaware, operates globally through its equity investments in companies across all market capitalizations in the energy and natural resources sectors, targeting institutional and retail investors seeking high current income and sector-specific capital appreciation. In recent years, the Trust has maintained stable operations with consistent monthly dividend distributions, including $0.0973 per share declared payable on December 31, 2025; it previously operated under the name BlackRock Global Energy and Resources Trust before adopting its current name. No major acquisitions, funding rounds, partnerships, or strategic reorganizations specific to BGR have been announced in the last 1-2 years, amid BlackRock's broader closed-end fund activities involving municipal CEF reorganizations in 2025-2026. Portfolio positioning has emphasized upstream and downstream energy markets, with ongoing monitoring of energy transition themes including grid investments and traditional energy amid geopolitical developments.
