Business
BHP Group Limited is a world-leading resources company that explores, develops, produces, and markets a diversified portfolio of commodities including copper, iron ore, metallurgical coal, nickel, and potash; it operates large, long-life, low-cost assets primarily in Australia, South America, and North America, with key products encompassing high-grade hematite iron ore from Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) operations such as Mt Whaleback, Area C, Jimblebar, South Flank, Yandi, and Yarrie mines; copper concentrate and cathode from Escondida (world's largest copper mine), Spence, and Pampa Norte in Chile, as well as Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill, and Carrapateena in South Australia; metallurgical coal from BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) assets including Goonyella, Peak Downs, Saraji, Caval Ridge, and Broadmeadow in Queensland; nickel sulphide from Nickel West in Western Australia; and potash development at the Jansen project in Canada. Founded in 1885 as the Broken Hill Proprietary Company and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, the company unified its dual-listed structure in January 2022 to a single ASX listing, enhancing strategic flexibility; it employs the BHP Operating System for operational excellence, leveraging AI and data analytics to optimize safety, productivity, and resource recovery while maintaining integrated rail, port, and marketing infrastructure for economies of scale. Recent developments include the January 2025 completion of the US$2.0 billion acquisition of Filo Corp. alongside Lundin Mining to form the 50/50 Vicuña Joint Venture for the Filo del Sol and Josemaria copper projects in Argentina and Chile; a July 2025 partnership with Lifezone Metals acquiring a 17% stake in Kabanga Nickel Limited to bolster nickel supply for electric vehicles; a cooperation agreement with CATL for electrifying mining equipment, fast-charging infrastructure, energy storage, and battery recycling; and an October 2025 announcement of AUD 840 million (US$554 million) investment to expand the Olympic Dam copper mine in South Australia with new tunnels, infrastructure, and an oxygen plant to boost production capacity, supporting a goal to increase global copper output from 1.7 million tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes annually amid anticipated 70% demand growth by 2050.
