- SPDR Bloomberg International Treasury Bond ETF (BWX) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to provide investment results that, before fees and expenses, correspond generally to the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg Global Treasury ex-US Capped Index. The fund primarily invests in fixed-rate, local currency sovereign debt issued by investment-grade countries outside the United States, including government bonds with a remaining maturity of one year or more rated Baa3/BBB-/BBB- or higher using the middle rating from Moody's, S&P Global Ratings, and Fitch Ratings; it holds approximately 1,377 securities with top country exposures to Japan (23.07%), France (5.03%), United Kingdom (5.01%), Canada (4.61%), and Spain (4.60%). The portfolio features an option-adjusted duration of 7.80 years, an option-adjusted spread of 12.8 basis points, and a quality breakdown weighted toward Aaa (20.83%), Aa (24.52%), and A (40.83%) rated bonds; maturity distribution spans 1-2 years (9.81%), 3-5 years (18.63%), 7-10 years (18.84%), and longer terms up to over 30 years (2.56%).
Launched on October 2, 2007, and issued by State Street Global Advisors (SSGA), a division of State Street Investment Management headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, BWX trades on NYSE Arca with assets under management of approximately $1.37 billion, a gross expense ratio of 0.35%, and a 30-day SEC yield of 2.58% as of September 30, 2025.
Prior to October 31, 2021, the fund operated as the SPDR Bloomberg Barclays International Treasury Bond ETF; prior to August 24, 2021, its benchmark was known as the Bloomberg Barclays Global Treasury ex-US Capped Index, reflecting rebranding alignments by Bloomberg Index Services Limited and SSGA. The index undergoes monthly rebalancing on the last business day of the month using a modified market capitalization methodology to cap country exposures consistent with total index market capitalization. No major acquisitions, funding rounds, new product launches, or strategic expansions specific to BWX have been reported in the last 1-2 years, though SSGA has pursued broader initiatives including partnerships with Bridgewater Associates for the SPDR Bridgewater All Weather ETF in late 2024 and renaming select SPDR ETFs to State Street branding in 2025 ahead of 401(k) mutual fund share class conversions.
