Business
Central Costanera S.A. is an Argentina-based electric utility company primarily engaged in the generation and wholesale commercialization of thermal electrical energy. Founded in 1992 and headquartered in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the company operates as a critical power provider to the Argentine Interconnection System (Sistema Argentino de Interconexión - SADI), supplying electricity to the Wholesale Electricity Market (Mercado Eléctrico Mayorista - MEM) administered by CAMMESA (Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico S.A.). Central Costanera operates one of the largest thermal power generation complexes in South America, situated in the southern port district of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, featuring a total installed capacity of approximately 2,305 megawatts (MW). The company's core product and service offerings comprise the generation and supply of base-load and peak-load electrical energy; thermal electricity generation via dual-fuel conventional steam turbine units utilizing natural gas, fuel oil, and gasoil; high-efficiency power generation via combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) configurations equipped with heat recovery steam generators; spinning and cold reserve capacity provisioning; ancillary grid support services, including reactive power supply, voltage regulation, and primary frequency control; industrial-scale operations and maintenance services for heavy turbomachinery, boilers, and auxiliary plant systems; and high-voltage transmission substation interconnection management. The company primarily serves electricity distribution utilities such as Edenor and Edesur, large wholesale consumers, and industrial off-takers throughout the Greater Buenos Aires metropolitan region and the national interconnected grid. In recent major corporate developments, Central Costanera completed a controlling ownership transition after Argentine power generation group Central Puerto S.A., through its subsidiary Proener S.A.U., acquired a 75.7 percent controlling equity interest in the company from Italian energy multinational Enel S.p.A., followed by a mandatory public tender offer to minority shareholders. Following its integration into Central Puerto's consolidated asset portfolio, Central Costanera has executed strategic operational overhauls, comprehensive turbine maintenance cycles, and plant efficiency modernization initiatives aimed at optimizing natural gas conversion rates, increasing dispatch availability, and reinforcing long-term grid reliability in Argentina's primary demand center.
