Business
Cineplex Inc. is Canada's largest movie theatre exhibitor and a diversified entertainment and media company that operates over 170 theatres and location-based entertainment venues across the country. The company offers film exhibition in standard, digital 3D, IMAX, ScreenX, VIP Cinemas, and 4DX formats under brands including Cineplex Cinemas, Scotiabank Theatres, SilverCity, Galaxy Cinemas, Famous Players, and Cineplex Odeon; alternative programming via Cineplex Events featuring international films, concerts, and sports; location-based entertainment through The Rec Room family entertainment centres, Playdium arcade complexes, and Cineplex Junxion hybrid venues combining movies, gaming, dining, and live events; food and beverage services encompassing concessions, Starbucks coffee, Tim Hortons outlets, and premium dining options; media solutions via Cineplex Media for cinema and digital place-based advertising; digital commerce through Cineplex Store for movie rentals and purchases; and the Scene+ loyalty program in partnership with Scotiabank, enabling points earning and redemptions on entertainment and lifestyle purchases. Headquartered in Toronto at 1303 Yonge Street, Cineplex traces its origins to 1979 when Cineplex Corporation was founded, evolving through mergers including with Odeon Theatres and later operating as the entity formed in 2011 following its public listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange under ticker CGX.TO. The company primarily serves Canadian consumers through its theatre network concentrated in major urban markets, with ancillary operations extending into digital distribution and amusement services across North America prior to recent divestitures. In recent strategic developments, Cineplex completed the sale of its Player One Amusement Group business, which provided arcade games and equipment, to OpenGate Capital for $155 million in cash in early 2024, while retaining a long-term supply agreement for its venues. In October 2025, it agreed to sell its Cineplex Digital Media subsidiary, a digital signage provider operating over 6,000 locations, to Creative Realities Inc. for $70 million in cash, with the transaction closing on November 7, 2025; Cineplex Media maintained an exclusive advertising sales agency role for the divested networks. The company continues to expand premium offerings, announcing three new ScreenX 270-degree auditoriums in 2025 including at Cineplex Cinemas Coquitlam and VIP, bringing its total to 20 locations, alongside plans for additional The Rec Room openings such as one targeted for Q2 2026.
