Business
IQ Real Return ETF (CPI) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks investment results corresponding generally to the price and yield performance of the Bloomberg IQ Multi-Asset Inflation Index, providing a diversified hedge against U.S. inflation rates through exposure to assets historically correlated with the Consumer Price Index. The fund allocates across public equity, fixed income, and commodity markets in the United States, including large-cap growth and value stocks across diversified sectors; U.S. Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) of short-, intermediate-, and long-term maturities; and commodities accessed through other funds. It employs a full replication technique to track the index and targets retail and institutional investors seeking real returns above inflation. Launched on October 27, 2009, by IndexIQ ETF Trust--a series trust domiciled in the United States and managed by IndexIQ Advisors LLC under New York Life Investment Management LLC--the ETF operates primarily in U.S. markets with a management fee of 0.29% following a reduction from 0.48%. In February 2022, the fund completed a strategic transition to track the Bloomberg IQ Multi-Asset Inflation Index, enhancing its inflation exposure amid elevated U.S. inflation levels not seen in nearly 40 years, with allocations emphasizing TIPS, large-cap U.S. equities, and commodities. This index change, announced by IndexIQ, positioned CPI as a more competitively priced inflation-hedging vehicle in the market. As of late 2023, certain sources noted the fund had ceased operations, though recent trading data through 2025 indicates ongoing availability on U.S. exchanges like NYSE Arca with net assets around $3.85 million. The broader IndexIQ lineup, part of New York Life Investments following NYLIM's 2015 acquisition of IndexIQ, underwent product renaming in 2024 to align with the New York Life Investments brand, though specific impacts on CPI remain unconfirmed in public disclosures.
