Business
Baraka Patenga Power Limited is a Bangladesh-based independent power producer (IPP) engaged in the generation and supply of electricity to the national grid of Bangladesh. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with registered offices in Sylhet, the company operates as a subsidiary of Baraka Power Limited. Baraka Patenga Power Limited develops, owns, and operates thermal power generation assets, delivering base-load and intermediate power to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) under long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). The company's core product and service offerings comprise heavy fuel oil (HFO)-based electrical power generation through its flagship 50-megawatt (MW) plant in Patenga, Chattogram; secondary energy generation via a 3.2 MW waste-heat recovery co-generation steam turbine system; flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) emission control and environmental management services; plant operation and maintenance (O&M) services; and bulk electrical transmission to high-voltage substations. Through majority-owned operating subsidiaries, the company manages an additional 215 MW of generation capacity, comprising a 51 percent stake in Karnaphuli Power Limited (operator of a 110 MW HFO-fired plant in Chattogram) and a 51 percent stake in Baraka Shikalbaha Power Limited (operator of a 105 MW HFO-fired facility in Shikalbaha, Chattogram), bringing its aggregate operating footprint to 265 MW. In recent strategic developments, the company has executed Power Purchase Agreement extensions and tariff restructuring with the BPDB under revised 'No Electricity, No Payment' (NENP) operating terms for its generation assets. Furthermore, Baraka Patenga Power Limited has implemented balance-sheet de-leveraging measures to retire foreign currency loans and high-cost project debt to mitigate currency exchange risks, while actively exploring strategic diversification into utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) generation and renewable energy projects to expand its long-term power generation mix.
