Business
Columbia Research Enhanced Emerging Economies ETF (ECON) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks investment results corresponding to the performance of the Beta Advantage Research Enhanced Solactive Emerging Economies Index, before fees and expenses, by investing at least 80% of its net assets in equity securities of companies located in emerging market countries. The fund employs a rules-based quantitative approach leveraging proprietary research from Columbia Threadneedle Investments to exclude lower-rated securities from the broad emerging markets universe while maintaining regional, country, and sector weightings, targeting large- and mid-cap equities for enhanced total return potential; top holdings include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (5.26%), Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. (4.17%), Alibaba Group Holding Limited (3.71%), and Tencent Holdings Limited (3.68%), with approximately 216 holdings diversified across emerging Asia (49.80%), developed Asia (29.65%), Middle East (7.69%), Latin America (6.58%), and Africa (3.29%). Launched on September 14, 2010, as part of Columbia ETF Trust II and managed by Columbia Management Investment Advisers, LLC (a subsidiary of Columbia Threadneedle Investments), ECON operates with a net expense ratio of 0.47%, total net assets of approximately $217-242 million, and a focus on diversified emerging markets exposure for institutional and retail investors seeking cost-efficient, tax-advantaged access to high-conviction emerging economy equities. In December 2025, Columbia Threadneedle Investments expanded its Research Enhanced ETF suite—building on the success of similar strategies—with the launch of six new actively managed and research-enhanced ETFs, complementing ECON's methodology of optimizing benchmark exposure by removing low-conviction securities to improve portfolio performance for financial advisors and investors. The fund maintains full replication of its index, daily pricing, and annual dividend distributions, with no reported acquisitions, partnerships, or major reorganizations specific to ECON in the last 1-2 years, while benefiting from the broader firm's ongoing ETF platform growth amid robust emerging markets demand.
