Business
Columbia Sustainable Global Equity Income ETF (ESGW) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks investment results, before fees and expenses, closely corresponding to the performance of the Beta Advantage Sustainable Global Equity Income 200 Index. The ETF employs a passive indexing strategy targeting the top 200 large- and mid-cap companies from developed markets within the MSCI World Index, selected via a multi-factor approach emphasizing financial stability, consistent cash flow for dividend support, and high environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards to pursue reliable income with lower volatility relative to broader equity markets. It provides exposure to a diversified portfolio across sectors including financials, industrials, consumer staples, materials, utilities, information technology, health care, energy, consumer discretionary, and communication services; key holdings as of late 2019 included Steel Dynamics, Ingredion, Schlumberger, Edison International, and Molson Coors Brewing, with significant geographic weightings in the United States (63.7%), Japan (13.9%), Australia (3.7%), Germany (2.9%), and Spain (2.4%). The fund, with approximately 200 holdings, a gross expense ratio of 0.40%, and an inception date of June 13, 2016, listed on NYSE Arca, historically delivered an index dividend yield of around 3.29% and a 30-day SEC yield of 2.78% as of December 31, 2019. Sponsored by Columbia Management Investment Advisers, LLC (now operating under the Columbia Threadneedle Investments brand), headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, the ETF serves investors seeking sustainable global equity income through transparent, tax-efficient vehicles focused on higher-quality companies in developed markets worldwide. In a significant operational change, ESGW announced its closure, with the final trading date on NYSE Arca set for March 20, 2020, as detailed in a prospectus supplement dated February 14, 2020; this followed underperformance, including a year-to-date return of -21.60% and a one-year return of -13.00% through available data points. No subsequent relaunches, acquisitions, partnerships, or funding rounds specific to ESGW have been reported, amid the sponsor's broader expansions such as launching six new ETFs across equity and fixed income in December 2025 and two actively managed fixed income ETFs in September 2024, growing its U.S. ETF suite to 20 offerings, half actively managed.
