iShares ESG Aware MSCI USA Small-Cap ETF (ESML) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the investment results of an optimized version of the MSCI USA Small Cap Index, characterized by a higher allocation to small-capitalization U.S. companies with favorable environmental, social, and governance (ESG) profiles as determined by MSCI; the fund generally invests at least 90% of its assets in the component securities of the MSCI USA Small Cap Extended ESG Focus Index and may invest up to 10% in certain futures, options, and swap contracts, cash, and cash equivalents. ESML provides investors with exposure to a diversified portfolio of approximately 900-1,000 small-cap U.S. equities across various sectors, excluding companies involved in controversial activities such as tobacco, controversial weapons, civilian firearms production and retailing, thermal coal, oil sands extraction, and severe business controversies, while optimizing for superior ESG ratings relative to the parent index. The ETF, which maintains a blend investment style in the small blend category, focuses on U.S. domestic markets for institutional, retail, and socially conscious investors seeking ESG-tilted small-cap equity exposure with risk and return characteristics similar to the broad small-cap benchmark. Launched on April 10, 2018, and domiciled in the United States, ESML is issued and managed by BlackRock, Inc. (NYSE: BLK) through its iShares brand, with primary operations in the U.S. and portfolio management handled by a team including Jennifer Hsui (since inception), alongside recent additions Matt Waldron, Peter Sietsema, and Steven White (since 2025), following the departure of Paul Whitehead effective June 30, 2025. The fund reports assets under management of approximately $1.9-2.0 billion, an expense ratio of 0.17%, and a dividend yield around 1.2%, with holdings concentrated in small-cap equities exhibiting strong ESG metrics such as low carbon intensity and high sustainability scores. In recent developments, ESML has experienced steady asset growth amid heightened interest in ESG small-cap strategies, with AUM expanding significantly since inception and net inflows supporting portfolio expansion; the fund benefited from strong performance, delivering a total return of 11.86% in 2024 and year-to-date gains of 8.17% as of late 2025. BlackRock, as issuer, implemented portfolio manager transitions in 2025 to enhance oversight, adding experienced managers amid broader firm-wide adjustments to its ESG product suite in response to regulatory naming guidelines from the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), though ESML's U.S.-focused strategy and name remained unchanged. These updates reflect ongoing refinements to align with client preferences for transparency in sustainability characteristics while maintaining the fund's core ESG optimization methodology.
