Business
iShares MSCI Italy ETF (EWI) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the investment results of the MSCI Italy 25/50 Index, a free float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index designed to measure the performance of the large- and mid-capitalization segments of the Italian equity market, covering approximately 85% of the market capitalization in Italy. The ETF provides exposure to a diversified portfolio of Italian equities across multiple sectors including financials, utilities, consumer discretionary, industrials, energy, and insurance; top holdings as of late 2025 include UniCredit S.p.A. (approximately 14%), Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. (12%), Enel S.p.A. (10%), Ferrari N.V. (6-7%), and Prysmian S.p.A., with around 26-32 total holdings representing roughly 70% concentration in the top 10 positions. It offers investors passive access to Italian stocks through a low-cost structure with an expense ratio of 0.50%, daily liquidity on NYSE Arca, and a dividend yield around 2.6-2.7%, with assets under management exceeding $630 million. Launched on March 12, 1996, and managed by BlackRock (iShares), the ETF is domiciled in the United States and primarily targets institutional and retail investors seeking geographic diversification into developed European markets, particularly Italy's export-driven economy featuring world-leading sectors like luxury goods, automotive, and banking. Geographically, it focuses exclusively on Italian-domiciled or primarily Italian-operating companies listed on the Milan Stock Exchange (BIT), with no direct operations outside Italy beyond investor accessibility in regions including the United States, Chile, Germany, Mexico, and Peru. In recent developments, EWI has delivered strong performance with year-to-date returns of approximately 47% as of late 2025, building on 10.39% gains in 2024 and 30.34% in 2023, driven by robust Italian market momentum amid attractive valuations (P/E around 13-14) and economic recovery. The fund declared a semi-annual distribution of $0.7021 per share payable on December 19, 2025, reflecting ongoing dividend policy consistency. No major structural changes such as index reconstitutions, acquisitions, partnerships, or product launches were reported in 2024-2025; however, portfolio weights have shifted with market performance, increasing emphasis on financials like UniCredit and utilities like Enel, while BlackRock maintained or expanded its seed holdings in line with standard ETF management practices.
