Business
Fidelity International Enhanced Index Fund (FIENX) is an actively managed mutual fund that seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in common stocks included in the MSCI EAFE Index, a market capitalization-weighted index of developed market equities excluding the U.S. and Canada; the fund employs a quantitative, multifactor statistical model to select securities with favorable fundamentals, such as improving earnings trends, reasonable valuations, and momentum factors, while maintaining sector and country weightings close to the benchmark to manage risk. Core holdings span large-cap companies across information technology, industrials, consumer discretionary, health care, and financials sectors, with top positions including Novo Nordisk A/S, ASML Holding NV, LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE, Shell PLC, and Novartis AG as of August 31, 2023; the strategy targets developed markets in Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, and Germany, among others, with minimal emerging market exposure. Launched on December 20, 2007, and managed by Fidelity's Quantitative Research and Investments team, including portfolio managers Maximilian Kaufmann, Shashi Naik, and Anna Lester, the fund had approximately $1.57 billion in assets under management as of August 31, 2023, with a gross expense ratio of 0.55%; it is domiciled in the United States and headquartered with Fidelity Investments in Smithfield, Rhode Island. The fund serves institutional and retail investors seeking enhanced returns over the MSCI EAFE Index (Net MA) through bottom-up stock selection and dynamic factor allocation, historically delivering annualized returns that have outpaced the benchmark over 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year periods ending August 31, 2023. In a significant strategic shift approved by the Board of Trustees in June 2023, FIENX converted to an exchange-traded fund (ETF) structure under the ticker FENI (Fidelity Enhanced International ETF) in November 2023, retaining identical investment objectives, policies, and strategies while offering benefits such as lower expenses, intraday trading flexibility, greater portfolio transparency, and improved tax efficiency; this reorganization affected over $13 billion across six Fidelity enhanced index funds, positioning FENI as the successor vehicle with continued focus on international developed equities. No further major changes, acquisitions, partnerships, or product launches have been reported since the conversion.
