Business
First Niagara Financial Group, Inc. was a prominent regional banking institution headquartered in Buffalo, New York, that provided a comprehensive range of financial services. Operating through its subsidiary, First Niagara Bank, N.A., the company delivered deposit accounts, lending solutions, cash management services, and investment products to individuals, families, and businesses. Over its history, the institution grew from its founding in 1870, later rebranding as First Niagara in 2000, and expanded its footprint significantly across New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. The bank pursued a strategy of growth through strategic acquisitions, notably expanding its presence with the purchases of Harleysville National in 2010 and NewAlliance Bank of Connecticut in 2011, and acquiring numerous branches from HSBC Bank USA in 2012. By 2016, First Niagara Financial Group managed approximately $40 billion in assets and operated around 390 branches. In a significant development, KeyCorp announced its acquisition of First Niagara Financial Group for approximately $4.1 billion in October 2015. The transaction officially closed on July 29, 2016, integrating First Niagara's operations and customer accounts into KeyBank during the fourth quarter of 2016, thereby concluding its independent operations.
